The Immutable zkEVM and Immutable X merge will create a single unified blockchain designed for Web3 gaming. Immutable confirmed the consolidation will take place in early 2026. The move combines two existing networks into one EVM-compatible chain. The unified chain is intended to simplify infrastructure for games, developers, and users.
Immutable zkEVM and Immutable X Merge Timeline and Announcement
The Immutable zkEVM and Immutable X merge was announced on April 8, 2025. The transition follows a phased migration plan. The final stage is scheduled to begin in February 2026. Immutable stated that operating two chains caused fragmented liquidity and increased technical complexity. The merge is structured to resolve those issues.
Immutable X launched as a Layer-2 network using StarkWare zero-knowledge rollups. It enabled gas-free NFT minting and trading. Immutable zkEVM launched in early 2024 using Polygon’s Chain Development Kit. It supports full Ethereum Virtual Machine compatibility and Solidity smart contracts.
Technical Changes From the Immutable zkEVM and Immutable X Merge
As part of the Immutable zkEVM and Immutable X merge, bridge contracts will be upgraded starting February 11, 2026. A mandatory two-week security delay will follow. Automatic asset migration from Immutable X to zkEVM is expected around February 25, 2026. Wallet addresses will remain unchanged. Most users will not need to take action.
Immutable X write operations will be disabled during deprecation. Minting and trading APIs will become read-only. Immutable Link will be phased out. Users who prefer to exit may withdraw assets to Ethereum Layer-1 before the cutoff date.
Developer and Asset Migration After the Merge
Developers will be required to migrate to the unified @imtbl/sdk. Immutable X RPC calls must be replaced with zkEVM equivalents. Interactions will follow standard EVM workflows. Immutable is providing migration documentation, sample code, and technical support.
Many projects are converting assets from ERC-721 to ERC-1155. The change supports high-volume gaming assets and improved liquidity. The unified chain will support over 680 games, including Guild of Guardians, Miomi, Villains, and Might & Magic: Fates from Ubisoft.
The Immutable zkEVM and Immutable X merge consolidates infrastructure into a single chain supporting Web3 gaming in 2026.
